Short answer: gold is the steadier choice and the easier one to store. Silver is cheaper per ounce and can rise faster, but it falls harder too and costs more to buy over spot. Many buyers hold mostly gold with some silver.

Side by side

Gold Silver
Price swings Smaller Larger, often much larger
Main source of demand Investment, jewelry, central banks About half industrial: electronics, solar panels, medical
Typical premium, 1 oz coin 4–8% 8–20%
Typical premium, larger bar 1–5% 3–8% (10 oz and 100 oz bars)
Space needed for $10,000 A couple of coins Over a hundred 1 oz coins
Allowed in an IRA? Yes (.995 pure or better) Yes (.999 pure or better)

Which made more money?

It depends on when you look:

  • Over 50 years (1976–2026), gold won. $1,000 in gold grew to about $37,900; in silver, about $20,100.
  • Over the 10 years to March 2026, silver won. $1,000 in silver grew to about $5,600; in gold, about $4,100.

That pattern is typical. Silver tends to have big bursts and long slumps, while gold moves more steadily.

Why silver swings more

About half of silver demand comes from industry, so silver rises and falls with the economy. Gold behaves more like insurance and often holds up when the economy struggles. Silver's market is also much smaller, so the same amount of buying or selling moves its price further.

The hidden costs of silver

  • Higher premiums. A 1 oz Silver Eagle typically costs 10–20% over spot, compared with 4–8% for a Gold Eagle. You start further behind.
  • Storage. The same dollar amount of silver weighs roughly 60 times as much as gold and takes up over 100 times the space. That matters for a home safe or storage fees.
  • Selling. Dealers usually buy silver back further below spot than gold.

To cut silver premiums, larger bars (10 oz or 100 oz) are usually cheapest per ounce.

The gold-to-silver ratio

This is how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. In early 2026 it was in the low 60s. Some investors buy more silver when the ratio is high, since silver is cheap relative to gold, and more gold when it's low. It's a rough guide, not a rule.

Which is right for you?

Lean toward gold if you want stability, plan to store at home, or are buying for a retirement account.

Consider some silver if you can stomach bigger swings, want to buy in small amounts, or believe industrial demand will grow.

Buying both is common: mostly gold for stability, with a smaller share of silver for growth potential.

Frequently asked questions

Is silver a good investment in 2026? It can be, but expect bigger swings than gold, and factor in higher premiums.

Will silver outperform gold? Sometimes, for years at a time. Over the last 50 years as a whole, gold did better.

Is silver easier to sell? Common coins sell easily, but you'll usually get less over spot back than with gold.

Can I put silver in a Gold IRA? Yes. Most Gold IRA companies also handle silver, provided it's at least 99.9% pure.
