Best Gold IRA for a $100,000+ Rollover (2026): How to Keep Costs Low

By Mark Sandulli · Founder & editor · Updated October 21, 2026 · Not financial advice

Short answer: if you’re already moving $100,000 or more, every Gold IRA company we rank will take your account, and yearly account fees become a small share of it: about $200 to $285 a year where fees are known, under 0.3% of the account. The cost that really matters at this size is the markup on the metal, which grows with every dollar you invest. Get same-day written quotes from at least two companies on the same coins or bars, and ask which fees they’ll waive. Our top three are Birch Gold Group (8.2), Augusta Precious Metals (8.1) and Noble Gold Investments (7.8).

What changes when your account is large

Gold IRA account fees are flat. They cost the same on $100,000 as on $20,000, so they shrink as a share of a bigger account:

Account size$235 to $285 yearly fees as a share
$20,0001.2% to 1.4%
$50,0000.47% to 0.57%
$100,0000.24% to 0.29%
$250,0000.09% to 0.11%
$500,0000.05% to 0.06%

The markup on the metal works the other way. It’s a percentage, so it grows with the purchase:

Purchase2% markup5% markup10% markup
$100,000$2,000$5,000$10,000
$250,000$5,000$12,500$25,000
$500,000$10,000$25,000$50,000

On a $250,000 rollover, the gap between a 2% and a 5% markup is $7,500, more than 25 years of account fees. A 10% markup, common on proof coins, means gold has to rise about 11% before you break even. That’s where to spend your attention. Gold IRA fees explained →

Our top picks for large accounts

CompanyOur scoreMinimumYearly fees after year oneBBB complaints per 100 reviewsLarge-account offer (company’s claim)
Birch Gold Group8.2$5,000$2353.9Pays the first year’s fees on transfers over $50,000
Augusta Precious Metals8.1$50,000$2350.7Says it may pay up to 10 years of custodian and depository fees for qualifying accounts
Noble Gold Investments7.8$20,000$2851.3None found

All three post their fees online. Augusta and Noble Gold have low complaint rates; Birch’s is higher, close to Goldco’s 4.2. None publishes buyback pricing, so get terms in writing from whichever you choose.

Other companies also advertise large-account offers. Goldco says it adds up to 10% bonus silver on qualified purchases of $100,000 or more, but only on its “premium coins”. Patriot Gold Group advertises “no fees for life” on storage and insurance for qualifying IRAs; reviewers report thresholds between $100,000 and $250,000. Lear Capital says it pays setup and one to three years of fees on limited-mintage coin purchases of $25,000 or more. We don’t count promotions in our scores, and a bonus can be offset by a higher markup, so compare the total price. Ten years of waived fees at $235 a year is worth about $2,350; one extra point of markup on $250,000 costs $2,500. Don’t move more money than you planned just to reach a promotion tier. How to negotiate a large rollover

At this size you have leverage. Before you sign, ask each company for these in writing, on the same day:

  1. The price over spot for the exact coins or bars you’d buy. Ask for the bullion price too: proof and collectible coins often carry much higher markups.
  2. Every fee they’ll waive, for how many years, and what ends the waiver.
  3. Buyback terms: how they’d price your metal if you sell, and any fees.
  4. The full conditions of any promotion, such as bonus silver or waived fees.

Then show the best quote to the other company and ask whether it can beat it. If a company won’t put the markup in writing, that tells you something.

If you’re moving $250,000 or more

Account fees are now about 0.1% a year, so nearly all of your cost is the markup. Two more questions are worth asking at this size:

  • Storage: segregated or commingled, which depository, and the insurance coverage per account.
  • Buying in stages: gold fell about 27% from its January 2026 record to its late-June low. Some large investors buy in stages instead of all on one day. Ask whether the company will lock the same markup for later purchases.

How much of your retirement should be in gold?

A bigger account doesn’t mean more of it belongs in gold. Gold pays no interest or dividends, and many planners suggest keeping it to a small part of a portfolio. See how much gold you should own, and talk to a licensed financial advisor before moving a large share of your retirement. New to rollovers? Start with how a Gold IRA rollover works.

Frequently asked questions

Which Gold IRA is best for $100,000 or more? On our scores: Birch Gold Group (8.2), Augusta Precious Metals (8.1) and Noble Gold Investments (7.8). At this size, compare written markup quotes; they matter more than the small differences between scores.

Do Gold IRA companies waive fees for large accounts? Several say they do. Birch pays the first year on transfers over $50,000, Augusta says it may pay up to 10 years of fees for qualifying accounts, and Patriot Gold Group advertises “no fees for life” on qualifying IRAs. None publishes every condition, so get them in writing.

Can I negotiate the markup on a Gold IRA? You can ask. Same-day written quotes from two or more companies are the best way to see whether a price is fair.

Is bonus silver worth it? Only if the markup on what you buy is fair. A bonus can be paid for by a higher price.

Is a bigger Gold IRA cheaper? The account fees are a smaller share, but the markup grows with the purchase, so the total cost in dollars still rises.
